Bragar Eagel & Squire, P.C. Announce Court Approval of Class Action Settlement in Camel Cash Litigation

Bragar Eagel & Squire, P.C., announce final approval of a class action settlement in Sateriale v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Case No. 09-08394, pending in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The class is defined as “all persons in California who, as adult smokers, were assigned registration numbers by RJR, collected C-Notes, and held C-Notes as of October 1, 2006.”

Pursuant to the Settlement, Reynolds will offer Class Members the opportunity to use C-Notes that they collected and held as of October 1, 2006, to redeem for non-tobacco merchandise, pursuant to the terms set forth in the Settlement. Class Members can participate in the Settlement even if they no longer hold their C-Notes.   Anyone who believes he or she is a member of the class should check the Camel Cash Settlement Website for information on how to participate in the settlement.   The settlement program should begin on or around August 1, 2016.

The litigation concerned Reynolds’s “Camel Cash” consumer program, which was conducted from October 1, 1991 through March 31, 2007. During that period, Reynolds attached Camel Cash “C-Notes” to certain packages of Camel-brand filtered cigarettes. Plaintiffs claim that adult smokers entered into a contract with Reynolds by purchasing Camel cigarettes and saving the C-Notes. The class’s claim is for breach of contract regarding the final six months of the Camel Cash program from October 1, 2006-March 31, 2007, when Reynolds did not offer non-tobacco merchandise as Camel Cash rewards.
